So if any of the seconds want to go out in Cardiff, they will have to make their own way down?

Bundy - the posting was written in white font ,but as you are aware because you were there, it was annonunced in training on Wednesday that the arrangements are as follows:

Everybody travels to Llandaff for the game on White Lion coach.

This will return after the game as normal with kit and anybody who is not staying.

Mike M will be making two pickups with the club minibus:

16 people at Midnight

16 people at 2 a.m.

Toatal 32 people. A list was made in training on Wednesday night which currently has 24 names on it which means that there are places for another 8 people available.

An excellent day was had by all yesterday at the Ladies rugby event in support of the Mayor's appeal. We managed to raise nearly £400 with more to come from the sale of DVD's of the event that will be available soon ( watch out for details). A very big thank you to Gaynor, Jeff & Lindsay who were fantastic on kitchen and gate duties as well as the Ladies Committee who laid on an absolutley delicious buffet for the teams who came back to the clubhouse afterwards.

Lastly a very big thank you to those of you who turned out to support the girls, I know they appreciated it and both myself and Sue certainly did!

Comments form the visiting teams were in praise of the event and the club itself, so once again a massive thank you to all who were involved and supported the event.

Some great news! We now have our very own Forum facility very kindly provided by Pierre of www.tredegar.co.uk.

We can now have as many discusions as we like on any matter that is important to you regarding anything at the club in a more structured and easier to follow manner than has been possible via the Guestbook.

This will not replace this site, it's just providing a much needed and welcomed facility. This main site will still remain the first port of call for the latest club news.

The Forums will be moderated in the same way as this one is now. You will have to register on the site to make postings to existing discussions and post new topics, a very quick and painless process!

I'm sure that you will enjoy the rest of the site as well. the guys who run have been doing a fabulous job for many years now and provide an invaluable service for the townspeople of Tredegar, long may they continue!!!

Forum is available @

http://www.tredegar.co.uk/forum/default.asp

just scroll down to the Tredegar Groups, Societies & Clubs section.

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Paul, you forgot to add that the backs always looked like male models, and in this day and age that means hairdryers, straighteners and gel, and the forwards, well lets just say they never won any beauty pageants!!!
Woody
08 April 2008 11:21:18
If you've ever wondered why the backs in Rugby Union have such an odd collection of names, then your wonder is about to be realised.

It is largely unknown to players and followers of the modern game that Rugby, in the very early days, started off purely as a contest for forwards in opposition in line-outs, scrums, rucks and mauls.
This pitted eight men of statuesque physique, of supreme fitness and superior intelligence in packs against one another. In those days the winner of the game was the pack that had gained most set
pieces. The debasement of the game began when backs were introduced. This occurred because a major problem was where to locate the next scrum or line-out. Selecting positions for these on the ground had become a major source of friction and even violence.

The problem was resolved through a stratagem of employing forward rejects, men of small stature and limited intelligence, to select positions on the field from where, when in receipt of the ball, they could be guaranteed to drop it in a random pattern but usually as far from the last set piece as possible. Initially the additional players were entirely unorganised but with the passing of time they adopted positions.

For instance, the half-back. He was generally the smallest and least intelligent of the backs whose role was to simply accept the ball and pass it on. He could easily (given his general size) have been called a quarter forward or ball monkey but then tolerance and compassion are the keys to forward play and the present inoffensive description was decided upon.

The five eight plays next to the half-back and his role is essentially the same except that, when pressured he usually panics and kicks the ball. Normally, he is somewhat taller and better built than the half-back and hence his name. One-eighth less and he would have been a half-back, three eighths more and he might have qualified to become a forward.

The centres were opportunists who had no specific role to play but who were attracted to the glamour associated with forward packs. After repeated supplication to the forwards for a role in the game they would be told to get out in the middle and wait for the ball. Thus, when asked where they played, they would reply "in the centre". And they remain to this day, opportunists and scroungers, men so accustomed to making excuses for bad and errant play that most become solicitors or real estate agents.

You may ask why wingers? The answer is simple. Originally, these were players who had very little ability and who were the lowest in the backline pecking order. They were placed far from the ball and given the generally poor handling by the inside backs, were rarely given the opportunity to even touch the ball. This is basically why, through a process of natural selection they became very fast runners and developed the ability to evade tackles.

But to get back to the game. The fact that they got so little of the ball led to the incessant flow of complaints from them and the eventual apt description "whingers". Naturally, in the modern game, the name has been adapted to become more acceptable.

Lastly, the full-back. This was the position given to the worst handler, the person least able to accept or pass the ball, someone who was always in the way. The name arose because, infuriated by the poor play invariably demonstrated by that person, the call would come "send that fool back", and he would be relegated to the rear of the field. So there you have it. The fact is that if a side does not have eight men of statuesque physique, of supreme fitness and superior intelligence, then they might as well play soccer.

I've added some new stuff to the 'News and Events' and 'Interesting Websites' sections.

There's a fantastic website that has been running for many years now which you may not know about, www.tredegar.co.uk.

Go to the 'Town News' forum and you will see a new forum that has been created for our involvement in this Year's Mayors Appeal
http://www.tredegar.co.uk/forum/

You'll have to register to post comments, so please do and show the whole town what this club is made of and what we stand for - this is for the Mayor's Appeal only

Hi 6abertillery boy,

Stronger team? How Aber are second/third is beyond me! We threw a 14 point lead away in our first match, which Aber's web site put down to a 'poor' first half display on Abers account, not the fact that we whiped Aber and chucked the game away in the second half! As for our second game, we could still be playing now and Aber wouldn't be able to score a try, even against 14 men for 20 minutes, at your home ground, against one of the supposedly weaker teams and with your 'over excited fans.' But, I'll bite my tongue and wish you good luck for this year and next, and eagerly await our next encounter!

Hi ,
Mr bundy their is nothing on abertillery rfc website that suggests anyone has said that aber is the best team in that leauge, one of the stronger teams yes but not the best which is a fair comment,as for saying aber thought you didnt want to play any rugby is rubbish,i guess it was your style of play to try and win that particular match which did'nt work for that match perhaps it will in the next thats how it goes,as for calling us a bunch of tossers i guess its down to yourself being a bad looser but im sure you,ll get over it.....Best of luck for the rest of the season.

Just wanted to say how proud I am to be associated with such a great club as part of the Ladies Committee.

The spirit on and off the field within all of the teams is a credit to you all. But we still need your help and support to run the club -your club.

So volunteers and ideas are greatly accepted, however off the wall the idea may seem at first -let's talk about it, we should not be afraid to try anything new and which gives everyone a good time!!

Remember you own the club, together we can make it the place to be!!!!!!!!!!!

True supporter - see my comment to Vicki below plus:
1.)The Ladies section was the first one to undergo the new look of the web site.
2.)Despite me asking for comments to go with the photos that are currently there I have not had a single response. - see my message below in October.
3) I do not have a photo of this year's team, if anybody has let me have it.

This is definately the last time that I will say it ( I will speak slowly for Janet & John)
